How to choose warehouse racking and heavy duty shelving

Load per shelf

Each unit lists a load per tier or per shelf, such as 150kg, 200kg or 400kg. Use the per shelf figure, not the total, when planning heavy items like paint tins, tools and tubs. Put the heaviest items on the lower shelves.

Size and layout

  • Measure the wall length and ceiling height, and allow room to reach the top shelf.
  • Packs like 2x1.8M, 4x1.5M or 4Mx2M let you line up units along a full wall.
  • Long span shelving, like the Centurion 1 bay and 2 bay units, suits wide or bulky items.

Boltless assembly

Most units here are boltless, so the frame slots together and the shelves drop in. Assembly is quick with a rubber mallet. Anchor tall units to the wall for stability, especially when loaded.

Shelf type and finish

Most use MDF or steel shelves on a steel frame, in black, charcoal, silver, blue or orange powder coated finishes. MDF shelves give a flat surface for smaller items and boxes. Keep MDF shelving out of wet spots, as damp can swell the boards over time. Clear tubs with labels on the front make it easier to find things on high shelves.

To round out the garage, see tool chests, workbenches and storage cabinets.

Warehouse Racking & Heavy Duty Shelving: common questions

Is this real pallet racking?

Some product names include pallet racking, but these are freestanding boltless shelving units loaded by hand, not forklift pallet racking for warehouses. They suit garages, sheds, storerooms and small business stock rooms. Check the per shelf load to match what you plan to store.

How much weight can garage shelving hold?

It depends on the unit. Many Giantz units here are rated at 150kg or 200kg per shelf, and the Centurion long span shelving is rated at 400kg or 800kg per level. Always use the per shelf figure and spread weight evenly across each shelf.

What size garage shelving do I need?

Measure the wall length, the depth you can spare and your ceiling height. 1.8m and 2m tall units suit most garages. For long walls, a multi pack like 4x1.5M or 4Mx2M gives matching units side by side.

Is boltless shelving easy to put together?

Yes. Boltless shelving slots together without nuts and bolts, so most people can build a unit with a rubber mallet. Work from the bottom up and check each shelf is level as you go. Anchor tall units to the wall once assembled.

What is long span shelving?

Long span shelving has wider beams between uprights, so each shelf can hold bigger and bulkier items. The Centurion units here come in 1M and 1.5M wide bays, in 1 bay and 2 bay setups, rated at 400kg (Standard) or 800kg (Pro) per level.
