Ice Makers

(66 products)

A benchtop ice maker produces fresh ice in minutes, which is handy for parties, summer and entertaining areas. Choose between compact countertop models and larger units with higher daily output, some with water dispensers built in. Check the daily ice output, basket size and bench space, and allow room for ventilation. Pair it with bar fridges and fridges, keep drinks cold in eskies, or browse all kitchen appliances.

How to choose an ice maker

Benchtop or commercial

Portable benchtop ice makers are the most common type here. They fill from a water tank you top up by hand, so they work anywhere there is a power point. Larger commercial style machines are built for bigger daily output, such as the 60 kg Devanti model, and suit cafes, bars or a busy entertaining area.

Daily output and bin size

Two numbers matter. Daily output (in kg per day) is how much ice it can make over 24 hours. The bin or basket size is how much it holds at once. A small benchtop unit is fine for drinks at home, but for parties you may want to make ice ahead and store it in a freezer or esky.

Ice makers with water dispensers

Some models combine an ice maker with a cold and hot water dispenser, such as a 3 in 1 unit with a 3 L tank. These take up more bench space but replace a separate water cooler.

Space, power and setup

  • Measure the bench and leave a gap around the vents for airflow.
  • Check power use on the product page if it will run all day.
  • Check whether a model can connect to a water supply or is tank fill only.

Finishes and price

Most units come in black or silver, with steel or plastic housings. Prices start from about $110 for compact benchtop machines, with most around $230, and commercial machines cost more. Devanti and POLYCOOL are the main brands. For a full bar setup, look at commercial kitchen equipment and coolers and drinkware.

Ice Makers: common questions

How much ice does a benchtop ice maker make?

It depends on the model. Output is listed in kg per day, which is the total over 24 hours, not what is ready at any one time. Benchtop units suit everyday drinks, while commercial machines like the 60 kg model are built for much higher demand. Check the product page for the daily output and bin size.

How fast does an ice maker make ice?

Most portable machines produce a batch of ice within minutes once they are running, then keep making batches until the basket is full. The first batch can take a little longer while the unit cools down. The product page lists the cycle time for each model.

Does an ice maker need to be connected to a water supply?

Most benchtop models don't. You fill the water tank by hand and the machine draws from that. Some larger and commercial units can connect to a water supply, which suits heavy use. Check the product specs to see how each model is filled before you buy.

Does the ice stay frozen in the basket?

In most portable ice makers the basket is not a freezer, so ice slowly melts and the water runs back to the tank to be made into ice again. For parties, move fresh ice into a freezer or esky as it fills up.

How much bench space does an ice maker need?

Check the dimensions on the product page and add a gap on each side for the vents, as the unit needs airflow to work well. Benchtop models are compact enough for most kitchens, while 3 in 1 units with a water dispenser and commercial machines need noticeably more room.

Can I use an ice maker outdoors?

Ice makers are built for indoor use or covered areas. In a hot outdoor spot it will work harder and make ice more slowly. Keep it out of direct sun and rain, on a flat surface near a power point, for example under a covered alfresco area.
