How to choose a TV unit
Match the width to your TV
Pick a unit at least as wide as the TV, and ideally a bit wider so it does not look top heavy. As a guide, a 55 inch TV is about 123 cm wide, a 65 inch about 145 cm and a 75 inch about 167 cm. Popular unit widths here are 160 cm, 180 cm and 200 cm. Check the TV stand or feet position too, as some TVs have feet near the edges.
Height and viewing
Low-line units suit wall-mounted TVs and big rooms where the couch sits back a fair way. Taller stands lift the screen closer to eye level when seated, which helps in bedrooms and smaller lounges. Aim for the middle of the screen to be roughly at eye height from your seat.
Storage, drawers and cables
- Drawers: hide remotes, controllers and cables.
- Open shelves: best for consoles, set-top boxes and soundbars that need airflow and a clear line for the remote.
- Glass doors: show off gear while keeping dust out.
- Cable holes: look for cut-outs in the back panel to keep leads tidy.
LED lights and finishes
Some units have built-in LED strips, often colour changing with a remote. White is the most popular finish, then wood tones and black. Most units are engineered wood, with some glass, metal and timber designs. Pair the unit with floating shelves above for decor, or a matching piece from buffets and sideboards.
What to expect on price
Prices start from about $65 for compact stands, with most around $190. Wide 180 cm to 200 cm units with drawers and lighting sit higher. For extra games and DVD storage, see media storage.
