How to choose a mattress
Get the size right
Standard Australian sizes are roughly: single 92 x 188 cm, king single 107 x 203 cm, double 137 x 188 cm, queen 153 x 203 cm and king 183 x 203 cm. Queen and double are the most common in the range. Match the mattress to your bed base, not just the room, and check the exact measurements on the product page. Shop by size with queen, king or single mattresses.
Foam, spring or a mix
- Memory foam: moulds to your shape and cuts down movement from a partner. Cool gel foam helps if you sleep hot.
- Pocket spring: more bounce and airflow, and a firmer edge to sit on.
- Hybrid: springs underneath with foam layers on top, a middle ground many people like.
Pillow top and euro top
These add a soft comfort layer on top of the support core. A pillow top is sewn on as a separate layer, while a euro top is built flush with the sides. Both add plushness, so side sleepers often prefer them.
Thickness and firmness
Mattresses here run from slim options around 18 cm, good for kids beds, bunks and guest rooms, up to deep 30 cm plus builds with more comfort layers. As a rough guide, side sleepers suit medium to soft, back sleepers medium to firm, and stomach sleepers firm so the hips do not sink.
What to expect on price
Prices start from about $85 for slim and foldable foam mattresses, with most around $300 to $350. Thicker hybrid and pillow top mattresses in queen and king sit higher. Brands in the range include Bedra, Dreamz and Ramesses.
