How to choose portable fridges

Pick the size

  • 20L to 40L suits day trips, solo travel and weekends for one or two people.
  • 45L to 70L is the common camping size for a couple or small family.
  • 80L and up suits long trips, caravans and larger groups.

Chest or upright

Chest fridges sit low in a car or ute and keep the cold in when you open the lid. Upright fridges, like the GECKO and Glacio models, open like a household fridge and suit caravans, motorhomes, tiny homes and camp kitchens where you want shelves and easy access.

Single or dual zone

A single zone fridge runs as either a fridge or a freezer. Dual zone models split the space so you can keep frozen food and cold drinks at different temperatures at the same time. The VEVOR compressor range comes in both, so check the zone in the product name.

Power options

Check that the fridge runs on the power you have. 12V/24V covers the car or caravan, and 12V/24V/240V lets you pre cool at home the night before. For longer stays off grid, look at generators or plan a solar and battery setup. Our camping and hiking range and coolers and drinkware cover the rest of the trip.

Portable Fridges: common questions

What is the best portable fridge freezer to buy?

The right one depends on how you travel. A 20L to 40L compressor fridge suits short trips and small cars. A 50L to 70L chest fridge suits most family camping. If you have a caravan or motorhome, an upright 90L or larger gives you shelves and a proper freezer section.

What size portable fridge do I need for camping?

As a rough guide, 40L to 50L suits a couple for a weekend, and 60L to 80L suits a family or longer trips. Bigger is not always better, as a larger fridge takes more space and power. Measure your boot or tray before deciding.

Can a portable fridge run on 240V at home?

Many can. Look for 12V/24V/240V in the product name, such as the Glacio and Kolner models. Those let you plug in at home or at a powered site. Fridges listed as 12V/24V only are made for the car, caravan or a battery setup.

What is the difference between single and dual zone?

A single zone fridge has one compartment set to fridge or freezer temperature. A dual zone fridge has two compartments with separate settings, so you can run one side as a freezer and the other as a fridge. Dual zone suits longer trips where you carry frozen food.

Chest fridge or upright fridge?

Chest fridges fit low in cars and utes and lose less cold air when opened. Uprights take up less floor space, have shelves and doors like a home fridge, and are popular in caravans, motorhomes and tiny homes. Choose based on where it will live most of the time.
