How to choose a trolley, hoist or winch

What is in this range

Alongside trolleys and tool carts, this collection includes electric hoists, recovery winches and synthetic winch rope. Pick by the job: wheeling loads across the ground, lifting straight up in a garage or shed, or pulling a vehicle or trailer.

Electric hoists

Hoists are rated with two figures, such as 500/1000 kg. The higher number applies when using the pulley block to double the line. Check the cable length, such as 18 m or 20 m, and the mounting beam you will hang it from. Most come with a corded or wireless remote.

Winches and winch rope

  • Pulling capacity: choose a winch rated well above the weight of the vehicle or load.
  • Synthetic rope: Dyneema rope, such as 5.5 mm x 13 m, is lighter than steel cable and easier to handle.
  • Remote compatibility: check the voltage and plug before buying a spare remote.

Trolleys and carts

For moving boxes and gear by hand, compare load rating and wheel type. Pneumatic tyres suit grass and gravel, solid wheels suit concrete.

Price guide

Ropes and accessories start from about $39, with most hoists and winches around $150.

Trolleys: common questions

What do the two weight ratings on a hoist mean?

A hoist rated 500/1000 kg lifts up to 500 kg on a single line, and up to 1000 kg when the hook pulley is used to double the line. Doubling halves the lifting height and speed. Always check the product page and never lift more than the rating for the setup you are using.

Is synthetic winch rope better than steel cable?

Synthetic rope, such as Dyneema, is lighter, floats and does not hold the same energy as steel if it snaps, which is why many 4WD owners switch. It needs protecting from sharp edges and heat. Check the rope diameter and length match your winch drum before buying.

Will this remote work with my winch?

Check the voltage, plug type and number of pins on your winch, then compare with the product page. Wireless remote kits list which winch types they suit. If in doubt, match the same voltage and connection style as your current remote.

What can an electric hoist be used for?

Electric hoists lift heavy items straight up, such as engines, roof racks, tool boxes or bulky gear stored in a garage or shed. They need a strong beam or frame to hang from that is rated for the load. Check the cable length to make sure it reaches the floor from your mounting point.

What is the duty cycle on a winch or hoist?

Duty cycle is how long the motor can run before it needs to rest and cool down. Check the product page for the figure. For long pulls or repeated lifts, stop and let it cool to avoid overheating the motor.

Should I get pneumatic or solid wheels on a trolley?

Pneumatic tyres roll over grass, gravel and bumpy ground more easily, and soften the ride for the load. Solid wheels do not go flat and roll well on smooth concrete in a garage or warehouse. Pick based on where you will push it most.
