How to choose camping and hiking gear

Sleep warm and dry

Sleeping bags are rated for the lowest temperature they are comfortable in, so pick one rated a few degrees below the coldest night you expect. Inflatable mattresses come in single, double and queen sizes. Self inflating mats pack smaller for hiking, while thicker air beds with a pump suit car camping.

Shelter and camp comfort

  • Check the sleeping capacity, set up size and packed size of any tent.
  • Shower and toilet tents give privacy at sites without amenities.
  • Folding camp tables and chairs, some in aluminium for less weight, make long stays easier.

Water, cooking and safety

Camping appliances run on gas, battery or mains power, so match them to where you stay. Water containers, such as 25 L jerry cans with a tap, are worth having at bush sites. Camp safety gear and caravan accessories are also in the range, so pack a first aid kit and a light that works without the car.

Weight versus comfort

Hikers should check the weight of every item and favour foldable, portable gear. If you drive to the site, weight matters much less. Small items start from about $15, and most gear sits around $40 to $80. Weisshorn, Intex, Bestway and Levede are among the brands here. Round out the kit with eskies, a gazebo for shade or a backpack for day walks.

Camping & Hiking: common questions

What temperature rating should my sleeping bag have?

Choose a bag rated a few degrees below the coldest night you expect. A summer bag suits coastal camping in warm months, while inland and alpine trips in winter need a lower rating. The rating is listed on each product. A liner or thermal clothing adds warmth if nights are colder than expected.

How many people does a tent really sleep?

The number on a tent assumes everyone lying shoulder to shoulder with little gear inside. For comfort, choose one size up, so a 4 person tent for two adults and a child. Check the floor dimensions and the peak height in the listing if you want to stand up inside.

Does the air mattress come with a pump?

Some do and some do not. Self inflating mats need no pump, just a few breaths to top up. Larger air beds may have a built-in electric pump, a battery pump or need a separate one. The listing shows what is included and what power the pump needs.

What size is the shower tent?

Shower and toilet tents are usually tall, narrow pop-up tents, and double versions have two separate rooms. Check the floor size and height in each listing to make sure you can stand and turn comfortably. Peg them down well, as their height catches the wind.

How heavy is camping gear for hiking?

Weight varies a lot. Car camping tents, steel chairs and large tables are heavy and best carried from the car. For hikes, look for compact, foldable items and check the weight listed on each product. Keep the total pack weight comfortable for the distance you plan to walk.
