How to choose a kitchen or laundry sink

Single bowl, double bowl or laundry tub

  • Single bowl: compact sizes like 45 x 30 cm suit small kitchens, bar areas and butler's pantries.
  • Double bowl: lets you wash in one side and rinse or stack in the other.
  • Sinks with a drainer: handy if you hand wash and air dry dishes.

Mounting style

Drop in (top mount) sinks sit on the benchtop and are the easiest to fit. Undermount sinks sit below the benchtop for a clean edge that is easy to wipe, but they need a stone or solid bench. What size kitchen sink do I need?

Start with your sink cabinet. The sink needs to fit inside its internal width, with room for the benchtop on either side. Single bowls around 45 cm wide suit small kitchens, while double bowls and sinks with drainers often run from about 80 cm up to 155 cm.

What is the difference between undermount and top mount sinks?

A top mount, or drop in, sink rests on the benchtop with a lip around the edge, and suits most benchtops including laminate. An undermount sink is fixed below the benchtop so crumbs wipe straight in, and is usually paired with stone. Some sinks here can be fitted either way.

Are stone sinks better than stainless steel?

They are different, not better. Stone sinks are quieter, resist scratches and come in black or white for a modern look. Stainless steel is lighter, budget friendly and very easy to clean. Pick based on your style and how hard you are on the sink.

Can I use a laundry tub for washing clothes?

How do I clean a black stone sink?

Wipe it down daily with warm soapy water and a soft cloth, then dry it to stop hard water marks. For build up, use a paste of bicarb soda and water. Avoid bleach and abrasive scourers, which can dull the surface.
