How to choose outdoor and garden gear

Shade and shelter

Umbrellas, sunshades, gazebos, shade sails and sheds make up a solid part of the range. For shade, measure the area you want covered and think about where the afternoon sun hits. Umbrellas suit a single table, while gazebos cover a whole dining setting. Look for UV resistant fabric, the most common feature across the range.

Power equipment: petrol, electric, cordless or solar

  • Petrol: the most common option for mowers, tillers, chainsaws and generators. Best for big blocks and heavy work.
  • Electric (corded): lighter and quieter, good for small yards close to a power point.
  • Cordless and battery: no cord to drag, handy for trimming and quick jobs.
  • Solar: handy for garden lights and other spots with no power, no wiring needed.

See outdoor power equipment for the full list.

Materials that last outside

Steel is the most common material, used in sheds, frames and furniture. Plastic and aluminium are lighter and will not rust. Timber pieces, such as raised garden beds in pine or Douglas fir, look natural but should be treated or oiled to last. Rattan, glass and fabric show up mostly in furniture.

Growing and garden beds

Pots and planters are one of the biggest groups here, alongside raised beds, weed mat and garden tools. Raised beds come in sizes from around 111 x 111 cm up to 200 x 200 cm. Group plants with similar water needs, and browse pots and planters for containers.

What to expect on price

Prices start from about $115 for small items and accessories, with most around $450. Ride-on equipment, large sheds and outdoor lounge settings sit at the top end.

Outdoor & Garden: common questions

Should I buy a petrol or battery garden tool?

Petrol tools have more power and no run time limit, so they suit large blocks, thick grass and heavy pruning. Cordless battery tools are quieter, lighter and need less upkeep, which suits smaller yards and quick jobs. Corded electric is the cheapest to run if you have a power point nearby.

How big should a gazebo or umbrella be?

Measure your table or seating area and add at least 50 cm on each side so people stay in the shade as the sun moves. A single umbrella suits a small table, while a 3 x 3 m gazebo or larger covers a dining setting. Check the base or anchoring needed for windy spots.

What size raised garden bed should I get?

Keep the width to what you can reach from both sides, usually no more than about 120 cm, so you never need to step on the soil. Our timber raised beds range from around 111 x 111 cm to 200 x 200 cm. Deeper beds suit root vegetables, shallower ones suit herbs and lettuce.

Does outdoor gear need assembly?

Most larger items, like furniture, sheds, gazebos and garden beds, arrive flat packed and need some assembly. Smaller items like tools and lights are usually ready to go. The product page lists what is included and whether assembly is needed.

How do I protect outdoor items from the weather?

Choose UV resistant fabrics and rust resistant materials like aluminium or plastic where you can. Cover furniture and BBQs when not in use, store cushions somewhere dry, and oil timber once or twice a year. Keep power equipment in a dry shed or garage.
