Power & Electrical

(999 products)

This range covers the gear that keeps power flowing on site, at the campsite and during outages at home. Choose from portable generators, quieter inverter models for sensitive electronics, and supporting electrical supplies. Add up the running watts of everything you plan to plug in, allow extra for motors that surge on start-up, and always run generators outdoors with good airflow. Compare generators and inverter generators, or browse outdoor power equipment and all tools and hardware.

How to choose power and electrical supplies

What the range covers

This range mixes several kinds of power gear: portable solar panels and solar connectors, camping batteries and generators, step down transformers, power points with USB ports, cables and adapters, and auto repair and lighting gear. Petrol, electric and solar powered items are all in the mix, from GENPOWER, VEVOR and CHOETECH among others.

Off-grid and camping power

  • Portable solar panels charge batteries and power stations at camp. Check the wattage and connector type.
  • Solar branch connectors join panels together, so match them to your panel cables.
  • Generators suit bigger loads. Add up the watts of everything you will run and allow extra for start-up surges.

Transformers and converters

A step down transformer converts Australian 240V mains to 110V for overseas appliances. Choose a wattage rating well above the appliance's draw. Converters do not change the frequency, so check that clocks and some motors are suitable.

Wiring and safety

Fixed wiring, such as wall power points with USB charging, must be installed by a licensed electrician in Australia. Plug-in items and portable solar gear are DIY. Accessories start from about $11, with most items around $30 to $50, and generators and solar kits costing more. For more off-grid gear, see camping and hiking or solar lights.

Power & Electrical: common questions

Can I install a USB power point myself?

No. In Australia, wall power points are fixed wiring and must be installed by a licensed electrician. Buying the outlets yourself is fine, and your electrician can fit them. Check the listing for the number of outlets, USB and USB-C ports and the charging output.

What does a step down transformer do?

It converts Australian 240V mains power to 110V so you can run appliances made for countries like the US. Choose a transformer with a wattage rating comfortably above the appliance, especially for motors or heating elements. It changes voltage only, not frequency.

How much power does a portable solar panel produce?

Output depends on the panel's wattage, the sun and the angle. A panel rarely hits its full rated wattage, so allow for less on cloudy days or in winter. Check the wattage, voltage and connector type in the listing to make sure it suits your battery or power station.

Is a generator safe for sensitive electronics?

Inverter generators produce cleaner power that suits laptops, phones and TVs. Standard open frame generators are better for tools and lights. Check the listing for the generator type, or see our inverter generators. Always run any generator outdoors with good airflow.

How long does a generator tank last?

Run time depends on tank size and how much load you put on it. Most listings give a run time at a set load, such as half load. Running fewer appliances at once stretches each tank. Use fresh fuel and keep spare fuel in an approved container.

How do solar branch connectors work?

Branch connectors join two or more solar panels in parallel so they feed one controller or battery. Match the connector type and cable size to your panels, and check the current rating in the listing covers the combined output of the panels you are joining.
