How to choose an armchair or recliner

Accent chair, recliner or something in between

Accent and occasional chairs are mostly about looks and fit beside a sofa or in a bedroom corner. Recliners have a footrest and a back that tilts, so they suit long movie nights. There are also swivel chairs, rockers and sleeper chairs that fold out for guests.

Manual or electric reclining

  • Manual: a lever or push-back action, no power point needed.
  • Electric: buttons or a remote control to set the angle, and some add massage or heat functions.

If you are after full-body massage, look at massage chairs as well.

Fabric, velvet or PU leather

Fabric is soft and breathable. Velvet gives a richer look but shows marks. PU leather wipes clean easily, which helps with kids and pets. Timber or metal legs change the style a lot, so check them in the photos.

Size and clearance

Measure the floor space and check seat height and depth on the listing. Recliners need room behind for the back to tilt and room in front for the footrest, so leave a gap from the wall. Wall-hugger styles need less space. Also check the maximum weight capacity.

Price

Accent chairs start from about $100, with most armchairs and recliners around $300 to $450. Electric recliners with massage and heat sit at the top. For a classic shape, see rocking chairs or a statement egg chair.

Armchairs & Recliners: common questions

What is the difference between an armchair and an accent chair?

An armchair is any single seat with arms, usually built for comfort. An accent chair is chosen mainly for style, often a bold colour or shape that adds interest to a room. Many chairs here are both, so look at seat depth and padding if comfort matters most.

How much space do I need for a recliner?

Check the dimensions upright and fully reclined on the product page. Allow space behind for the backrest to tilt, unless it is a wall-hugger style, and enough room in front for the footrest to extend. Measure doorways too, so you can get it into the room.

Are electric recliners better than manual?

Electric recliners let you stop at any angle with a button or remote, which is easier if you have limited strength or mobility. Some also add massage and heat. Manual recliners are simpler, cheaper and don't need to sit near a power point. Choose based on how you will use it.

How much weight can an armchair hold?

It varies by chair. Most listings state a maximum weight capacity, so check it before you buy. Metal frames and solid timber generally hold more than lightweight accent chairs. If several chairs look similar, the weight capacity is a good way to separate them.

Is PU leather or fabric better for a recliner?

PU leather wipes clean easily and suits homes with kids or pets. Fabric feels softer and breathes better on hot days, but stains need spot cleaning. Velvet sits in between with a soft feel and a richer look. Pick what suits how the chair will be used.

Do armchairs and recliners need assembly?

Most need light assembly, like screwing on legs or slotting the backrest into the base. Instructions and fittings come in the box. Electric recliners usually just need the back attached and the power plugged in. The product page notes what is involved.
