How to choose bedding

Get the size right

Bedding here comes in single, king single, double, queen, king and super king. A king single is longer and wider than a standard single, so the two aren't interchangeable. Queen is the most common size in the range, followed by king.

Match fabrics to how you sleep

Hot sleepers usually do better with light, breathable fabrics such as bamboo blends. Cold sleepers can add fleece, sherpa or velvet throws for extra warmth. If easy washing matters, check the care label on quilts and pillows, as they often have different instructions to sheets.

Build the bed in layers

  • A mattress protector, plus a topper if the mattress feels too firm
  • Fitted and flat sheets with pillowcases
  • A quilt in a quilt cover, both in the same size as the bed
  • Pillows to suit how you sleep, and a throw at the foot of the bed

Check what comes in a set

Quilt cover sets and sheet sets usually include pillowcases, but the number can differ by size. Read what's included before buying extra, and check the fitted sheet pocket depth if your mattress is deep or has a topper.

Price guide

Bedding starts from about $18, with most pieces around $50 to $100. Brands include Accessorize, Bianca, Ramesses and Ardor, and the Giselle Bedding range is a popular search. Round out the bed with a mattress topper or one of our blankets.

Bedding: common questions

What size quilt cover do I need for a queen bed?

Choose a queen quilt cover for a queen quilt. The cover should match the quilt, not just the bed. Some people prefer a king quilt and cover on a queen bed for more drop over the sides, which also helps couples who tug the quilt back and forth.

What size is a king single bed?

A standard Australian king single mattress is about 107 cm wide and 203 cm long, compared with about 92 cm by 188 cm for a single. Single sheets won't fit a king single properly, so buy bedding labelled for your exact size.

How deep should fitted sheets be?

Measure your mattress from the bottom edge to the top, including any topper or protector. Choose a fitted sheet with a pocket depth a few cm deeper than that so it tucks under and stays put. The pocket depth is listed on most sheet products.

Is bamboo bedding good for hot sleepers?

Many hot sleepers like bamboo blends because they feel soft and smooth and tend to feel cooler than heavier fabrics. Check the listing for the exact blend and care instructions, as bamboo fabrics often prefer a gentle wash.

Is the bedding machine washable?

Most sheets, pillowcases and quilt covers are machine washable. Quilts, pillows and toppers vary, and some need a large machine or a gentle cycle. Check the care instructions on each product page before you buy if easy washing matters.

What is the difference between a quilt and a quilt cover?

The quilt is the filled insert that keeps you warm. A quilt cover is the removable fabric case that goes over it, a bit like a giant pillowcase, so you can wash it often and change the look of the bed. You need both, in the same size.

Do quilt cover sets come with pillowcases?

Most quilt cover sets include matching pillowcases, but the number can vary with the bed size. Check what comes in the set on the product page, and add extra pillowcases if you use more pillows.
